(and how KillerStarch™ came to be)

Julie Brennan and Neil Grimwood are gleefully fortunate to have found each other 10 years ago while rollerblading in Marina del Rey, California, right by the Venice Boardwalk. As part of the aging Baby Boomer generation, they have become increasingly interested in remaining healthy enough to enjoy the rest of their lives together residing by the calming Pacific Ocean while moving on their own two feet.

Since Julie managed medical offices (Internal Medicine and Nephrology) for thirteen years in Santa Monica, she was acutely aware of the ravages of diabetes, particularly with regard to the type II "adult onset" diabetes that is quickly becoming an epidemic, not only among the aging but among children! (However, although there is a 4 Kids page, this site is primarily for adults who CAN prevent developing diabetes by making a few changes in their lifestyle.)

A few years ago Neil had his annual check-up. When the doctor, Julie's boss, called Neil with the results of his bloodwork, he said, "Neil, everything looks good but fire your cook because your glucose is creeping up and without a change in your eating habits, you could be on your way to becoming a diabetic."

This called for an immediate and drastic change in the routine (understatement). Julie and Neil became focused on KillerStarch, a name Julie arrived at because of this unknown killer; most people think that it is SUGAR that promotes diabetes, when in fact the BIG MONSTER is Starch - hence, KillerStarch™.

3 months later.....after being on KillerStarch "mode", Neil went back to his doctor to have an AIC test. This one blood test is an AVERAGE of glucose control over the past two to three months. NEIL'S WAS NORMAL. "Normal" is a good word in Medicine.

We accomplished our goal because we were personally motivated and because friends started voluntarily reducing their starchy food intake as a result of the KillerStarch message. We therefore decided to take our message to a wider base of people since it became apparent to us that SO many people didn't know . . . "the shocking truth about STARCH". Neil, Julie and their friend filmmaker Rob Womack (also a KillerStarch devotee as preventive measures) have even started production for KillerStarch™ The Movie. With some footage already "in the can", (and as their available time and finances allow), this funny, informative horror film could come to life on the big screen or silver screen - someday.

KillerStarch™ - Staples TackDots™ - and Life

Our goal here is to present this information in a way that is shocking, amusing, informative, and EASY. Julie aspires to be the "shock jock" of diabetes prevention. Meanwhile, Neil invented a super cool new product just now being introduced at Staples-The Office Superstore called Staples TackDots ( click here: TackDots ) It is a mini-bulletin board that you can stick everywhere using a pushpin to tack notes or lists anywhere, such as on your computer monitor or inside your kitchen cabinets. In addition to having negotiated the intellectual property license agreement with Staples for Tackdots, Julie is doing some medical practice management consulting, promoting TackDots, and taking DreamWeaver webpage design classes at the Venice Skills Center so that she can build this site (still under construction) and also websites for physicians and small business owners.

Most importantly...Neil just had a physical, and their wonderfully smart physician, Dr. Neal Shanblatt (Santa Monica), while reviewing Neil's bloodwork results with him, didn't even have to slap Neil on the hand about his glucose. It was "normal" -- that beautiful word in Medicine. KillerStarch works.

KillerStarch continues to help us as it is an ongoing lifestyle work in progress. We don't have diabetes, and we don't want diabetes.
